pureinformation.stream assembles an archive of 3,000 text messages into a portrait of “Maya,” a self constructed entirely from transmitted language. Unlike public online activity, a text message is usually kept private, yet when stripped of context and recipients, the messages accumulate into something both voyeuristic and anonymous, a person rendered as pure data. The work asks whether identity survives compression, and what is lost when everyday exchanges are flattened into searchable text. In Hinduism and Buddhism, “Maya” is defined as the supernatural power wielded by gods and demons to produce illusions. With this in mind, pureinformation.stream allows visitors to encounter “Maya” not as a body but as an ephemeral stream, fragments that are charged with personal memories, and yet feel eerily generic.
Maya Man works with code and identity, building custom software that reflects on how digital platforms create self-image, particularly for young women raised inside the feedback loops of social media. By exposing the mechanics behind online self-presentation, she questions the boundary between the person and the profile.
