Before Kim Asendorf’s famous series, Monogrid, was sealed into a fully-fledged body of work, there was Monogrid 0.1. In this deceptively simple artwork, two algorithms share a single surface, one pushing the pixels out of place, the other reinstating them at their origin, creating a momentum reminiscent of a camera pan or stop-motion animation. Every Monogrid that followed was written on top of it. The work is testament to Asendorf’s laser-focus on the form of a pixel itself, and how an artist can embrace it with bottomless curiosity and still be synonymous with simplicity, in the likes of Mondrian and Malevich who came before him, only by other means.
